Fall 2007 Classes

Computer classes have concluded for this year. The next series of classes will take place in Spring, 2008.

All classes follow a lecture-type format, meaning that these are not "hands on" classes.

Registration for classes begins August 1. Please phone the circulation desk at 717-533-6555 to register or if you have any questions.

Intro to Windows
The purpose of this class is to show beginning computer users the very basic components of windows-based computers. If you don’t understand that sentence, this is the class for you. We will begin by examining the physical elements of the computer, including the hard drive, cd drive and peripherals. We will then examine the basics of the Windows operating system, with a focus on navigating through the system and creating/saving/moving documents.
Monday, September 10, 11.15am – 1pm; Thursday, September 13, 7pm – 8.45pm

Internet Basics
This class is for anyone who ‘kinda’ knows how to use the Internet. We take an anti-fatalistic approach, believing that anyone can master the basics of becoming ‘connected’ despite the overwhelming quantity of information on the web. We’ll talk about setting up a connection in your house, how to look for information, buy stuff, save your favorite pages, and use web-based e-mail. We’ll also talk a bit about Internet Security.
Monday, September 17, 11.15am – 1pm; Thursday, September 20, 7pm – 8.45pm

Tricky Word Processing
So you already know how to type letters in Microsoft Word, but you think there might be more you could do, maybe add pictures, links to web sites, or just use a different font. This class will show you how to take advantage of Word as a word-processing as opposed to just a typing program. We’ll start by modifying fonts, line spacing and the like and move on to creating style sheets and templates, as well as using the pre-loaded templates. Then we’ll add pictures, charts, hyperlinks and finish up by using tables.
Monday, September 24, 11.15am – 1pm; Thursday, September 27, 7pm – 8.45pm

Online Existence
Using google is just the beginning. In this class we’ll explore ways to immerse yourself completely in life online, or how to touch it briefly and get on with your offline day. We’ll start by explaining how RSS feeds and aggregators can make your life easier, despite their complicated names, how to use or avoid myspace, youtube, facebook and the like, how to create and search for blogs and to avoid being fooled by scam artists of various sorts. -
Monday, October 1, 11.15am – 1pm; Thursday, October 4, 7pm – 8.45pm

Free for All
Bring your questions – the session will be a question answer session and/or review of topics covered in earlier classes.
Monday, October 8, 11.15am – 1pm; Thursday, October 11, 7pm – 8.45pm
