Enrichment Classes

Winter/Spring 2008

 

In conjunction with the library's mission to support lifelong learning, the library hosts a variety of classes for adults.

Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and class size is limited. Participation in the following classes involves a fee, which covers the instructor’s honorarium. The library does not keep any part of the fee.

To register for the classes, you must contact the coordinator, Melissa Bittinger: send E-mail or call 533-6555, ext. 3717. You cannot register at the circulation desk.

Journal Writing: Creating a Voice of One's Own
Fridays, January 25 - February 15
1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Cost: $40.00
Instructor: Melissa Bittinger
This class is for beginners who would like to enhance their creativity, increase self-awareness, and improve writing and critical thinking skills. Participants will explore the many types of, and uses for, journals and will be offered a variaty of writing prompts and exercises to get the creative juices flowing. We will also focus on developing your writnig skills, learning to go beyond a simple chronicling of events. Whether your goal is personal fulfillment or creative development, this class will help your unique writer's voice to emerge. All particpants should bring to class any type of journal (a simple notebook is fine) and a pen or pencil.

Melissa Bittinger currently serves as the Adult Programs/Readers' Services Coordinator at the Hershey Public Library. She has taught both literature and writing classes at Lebanon Valley College and Franklin and Marshall College and has long been an avid journal writer..

The Magic of Irish Writers
Wednesdays, March 5, 12, & 19
7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Cost: $15.00
Instructor: Dr. Lee March
This class will read selected stories from Dubliners by James Joyce, after an introduction to the Irish literary scene of the early 20th Century. Participants will watch the spectacular film The Dead, based on Joyce's last short story in Dubliners, as well as consider poetry by William Butler Yeats.

Dr. Lee March teaches English at the Harrisburg Academy. A published writer, she has had poems appear in numerous magazines and journals. This past summer, Dr. March was granted a Trustee Fellowship by the Academy to take an independent literary tour of Ireland..

The Secrets of Writing for Magazines
Wednesdays, March 19 - April 23

Instructor: Lori Myers
Ever wonder how to get your byline into a magazine? Do you have a great idea for a non-fiction article or essay, but don't know how to go about getting it published? Then this is the class for you! Award-winning writer Lori Myers will take you through the step-by-step process of seeing your work in print - from how to come up with story ideas, researching markets, and refining your interviewing techniques to query letters, dealing with editors, and making the most out of rejections. Participants are encouraged to bring in their own writing to be read in class.

Lori Myers is a Harrisburg-based freelance writer with over 700 articles, essays, and fiction pieces in over 40 national and regional publications. She is a co-founder of the Central Pennsylvania Writers' Consortium and teaches workshops across the region.
Class is limited to 15 participants.

Understanding Buddhism
Tuesdays, April 1 - April 29
7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Cost: $25.00
Instructor: Dr. Jeffrey Long
This five-week course will explore the worldview, practice and history of Buddhism. Topics covered will include: the life and teachings of the Buddha, karma and reincarnation, meditation, the relationship between Buddhism and Hinduism and the transmission and transformation of Buddhism across Asia and in the modern West.

Dr. Jeffrey Long is Associate Professor of Religion and Asian Studies at Elizabeth College. Dr. Long is the author of A Vision for Hinduism: Beyond Hindu Nationalism and the forthcoming Jainism: An Introduction. He has traveled extensively in India and Japan and has practiced meditation with Buddhist monks from Thailand, Japan and the United States.
