Participation in the following classes involves a fee, which covers all of the classes in the series, the instructor’s honorarium, and any handouts. The library does not keep any part of the fee. Class size is limited. Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Receipt of the fee by the coordinator will hold your spot. Writing classes are limited to those 18 and older. You cannot register at the circulation desk.

Wednesdays, September 6 - October 25

Instructors: Jillian and Aaron Tweet
This class will explore the world of sign language while teaching those involved how to compose sentences and to incorporate sign language into their daily lives. Jillian has a degree in Deaf Education from Bloomsburg University and has taught sign language classes at the library. Aaron was born profoundly deaf and has worked hard at learning to vocalize, read lips, and communicate in a family with both deaf and hearing members.

Do you want to discover ways to begin your essays, articles, or stories with knock-out lead paragraphs? Do you want your readers to keep reading until they see the words “the end”? This workshop will unlock the secrets of those first one, two, or three sentences and how critical they are to the quality of any written work, whether it’s a personal essay, query letter, short story, novel, or magazine article. Fun in-class prompts and short at-home assignments will present all of the different ways to create a fascinating lead.

Instructor: Judy Wolfman
This introductory course will cover what you can write for children and how to write it. An overview of the children’s market, “tools of the trade,” where to find stories, and how to develop stories will be included. Basic writing information, as well as publishing information, will be provided. The instructor is a published children’s book author, freelance writer, and professional storyteller. She teaches classes and workshops on creative writing at area colleges and schools.

Mondays, October 23 – November 27
6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Cost: $45.00
Instructor: Susan Newell, MFA
This six-week introductory writing class on the short story will focus on character, plot, and what William Trevor calls “the art of the glimpse.” Whether the short story is back in vogue as a result of busy lives or because sometimes we just need a little something to get us through the day, it remains a powerful and enlightening form. Class participants will be assigned stories to read and writing exercises designed to enhance skills and understanding. Class discussions will center on the readings and the process of writing. The instructor is a fiction writer who also works as a writing coach, tutor, and teacher of community classes. She obtained her MFA from Goddard College and has served as a fiction editor for two Internet magazines. Her poetry and short fiction have been published in regional literary magazines.
The class is limited to 12 people.
