Moving Forward in Memoir

Mondays, March 22 – April 19

6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Cost:  $65.00

Instructor: Susan Newell, MFA

This class is designed for those who have been working on a memoir but need direction and motivation to move it along. It assumes such work has been written not as an entire life story (autobiography), but as stories and musings from a life (memoir). Students will be expected to share from previously written material and address what will help them push ahead. Discussions will include topics such as form, focus, framework, theme, and imagery as readings from other memoirs are considered. As the class progresses, students will write new or revised pieces for feedback and discussion by class members.

Susan Newell, MFA, is a published short story writer who has taught fiction, poetry, and memoir writing at the Hershey Public Library, the Mohler Senior Center, and the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in upstate New York. She is presently an ESL and

writing instructor with Penn State University.

Class is limited to 12 participants.

Playwriting: Stories for the Stage,

Dialogue for the Page

Wednesdays, March 31 - April 28

6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Cost:  $65.00

Instructor:  Lori Myers

Writing play scripts is no different than writing

dialogue for creative nonfiction and fiction. It doesn’t matter if they’re talking on stage or on the page. Dialogue shows conflict, pushes the story forward, reveals character, emotions, and relationships. This workshop will zero in on what characters say, why they say it, and how they say it. The result will be characters who are more human, multi-dimensional, and deeper than you’ve ever known. Each student will write a 10-minute play during the 5-week session. They will also have opportunities to read their own stories to the group (nonfiction, fiction, poetry) for comment in this workshop setting.

Lori Myers is an award-winning writer with hundreds of articles, essays, creative nonfiction, and short stories appearing in more than 40 national and

regional publications. She is a regular contributor to Central PA Magazine, B Magazine, Susquehanna Magazine, and many others.

Class size is limited to 15 participants.

 Playing the Publishing Game

Saturday, April 24

10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Join award-winning writers Lori Myers and Judy Wolfman, co-founders of the Central Pennsylvania Writers’ Consortium, as they lead you through the maze that will get you and your work of fiction to editors. The first part will cover the book synopsis, query, market research,

record keeping, and more. The second part will cover copyrights, permissions, contracts, rights, payments, promotional and marketing ideas, press releases and more. Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch.

Lori Myers is an award-winning author with hundreds of articles, essays, creative nonfiction and short stories appearing in more than 40 national and regional publications. She is a regular contributor to Central PA Magazine, B Magazine, Susquehanna Magazine, and many others.
