E-Reader Lending Policy

E-mail Print PDF

The library has obtained two Barnes and Noble Nooks™ and two Amazon Kindles™ e-reader devices for circulation. Our goal is to allow our patrons to experience an e-Reader so that they can make an informed decision, should they decide to purchase one, and to learn about the availability of free eBooks.
The library cannot guarantee the availability of:

  • Particular titles on the Overdrive system for checkout
  • A particular model of e-reader

The library also cannot guarantee that e-reader availability will coincide with the availability of particular or reserved titles on Overdrive.
The e-readers will circulate for ten days and are not renewable. The rate for overdue e-readers is $5 per day. Patrons are permitted to place holds on e-readers.
Patrons must present a valid driver’s license when checking out an e-reader. The name on the license must correspond to the name associated with the library card used to check out the e-reader. If there is a discrepancy, the patron will not be permitted to check out the device. The device will then return to the shelf or will be held for the next patron in any existing holds queue.
E-readers will be pre-loaded with a variety of titles. Patrons may request that the library load certain titles onto the e-readers prior to checkout.
Any patron over the age of 18 and without any outstanding fines may check out an e-reader. The patron must review and sign the E-Reader User Agreement before being permitted to check out a device.
Patrons must return the e-reader to a librarian at the circulation desk and may not leave the e-reader at the circulation desk when it is unattended. Returning an e-reader through the book drop or leaving an e-reader at an unattended desk will result in a $25 fine.
If a patron fails to return the e-reader and its accessories in good working order, the patron will be charged the full replacement cost of $200. This includes the e-reader device, the cover and any power or USB cables. The library director will make the final decision regarding damage assessments.
The library will send out an overdue notice when the device has not been returned after 14 days.
Patrons may not use their personal Barnes and Noble or Amazon accounts with library e-readers. This constitutes a violation of the user agreement and the patron will be charged the replacement cost of the device.
